If he has herpes on the palm of his hand (extremely unlikely), with open and oozing sores that is leaving a residue on the pole, and you grab it then immediately wipe this residue on your lips, it is physically possible to transfer the herpes virus, though again this scenario would be very unlikely. It is much more probable to transfer herpes to the lips after direct contact with the source, even if that person is not currently having an outbreak. Most likely mouth to mouth, or mouth to genital.

Yes! Bottom line, there are several different std's you can get from touching them and then you or another. Keep in mind "open" wounds, as well as virus's travel fast.
This is why the message about getting to know people, as well as asking questions can't be stressed more. You should never be not ask even when you think you know them.
One in two people have had HPV, the stats are real, and so are you.
Take care of you cuz no one will do a better job than you.Inform your self too.

Think about it this way: 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men have Herpes. If it were that easy to transmit an STI, then probably 99.9% of people would be infected.
Herpes is transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact. The virus does not survive outside the body for long at all, so toilet seats, subway poles, towels, etc. are safe. If sexual fluids cover the object, there may be a small chance of transmission. I have heard of some stories where strippers gave each other Herpes from sliding up and down the same poles. I don't know if that is only a rumor though.
It sounds like you may be asking about HSV1 (oral Herpes) which is easier to transmit. People often get this from their relatives when they are kids from kisses and drinking glasses. Since 80% plus of the population has oral Herpes, it may be a little harder to avoid.
Just remember that there are all sorts of diseases people get every day. You can be careful, but you can't live your life obsessing about getting infected. My fiance ended up with flesh eating bacteria one time when he stayed in a 4-5 star hotel. Bad things happen to good people. That's life.
Hope that helps!
