An infection isn't necessarily a disease. For example, consider "yeast" infections. You can transmit some yeast infections via sexual activity...but it isn't a disease.

A vaginal or rectal tear might get infected...through sexual activity...but this doesn't equate to a disease.

Both terms are interchangeable-it just depends on the wording that an agency will use to describe STDS/STIS. STI is what seems to be the politically correct term, but not everyone is embracing the use of it.

The true definition of disease includes the presence of signs/symptoms.

In recognition of the fact that many sexually transmitted infections have no signs or symptoms, the term Sexually Transmitted Infections is used -- infections don't have to have symptoms present

It is simply a more accurate term, although the general public wouldn't necessarily appreciate the difference.
