Why is sexual education such a touchy subject?

Why is sexual education such a touchy subject? So many adults don't want children to have sexual education in school, yet we live in a country where
-we have the highest teen pregnancy rate in the western world
-shows like Teen Mom and The Secret Life of the American Teenager glorify teen pregnancy
-1 in 4 people have an STI (I'm using the most common statistic; other estimates vary.)
-80% of sexually active adults have some form of HPV (not all forms cause symptoms or problems, however)
-most people are ignorant to the basics of human reproduction (Go ask someone what a fallopian tube is. Now go look it up. How wrong were they?)
-abortion and child abandonment rates are through the roof
-some morons actually use abortion as their form of birth control
-most teens don't know how to properly use a condom

My high school took an abstinence only approach (which you could opt your child out of if you wanted to), and at least half a dozen girls were pregnant by my senior year. Whether you want to advocate the behavior or not, teens are having sex. Whether the bible says you can or can't do something is irrelevant in a public school system, where religion should have no influence over the curriculum. School exists to teach children facts, not morals. That's what your parents are for.
When I have a kid, I won't want her to have premarital sex, but if she chooses to, I want to make sure she's going to know how to take care of herself.

So, why are all these parents so committed to putting their children in danger? Why are they so insistant on witholding facts from their children that could keep them safe?

I know what you mean.. Its cause sex is such an overrated thing in America. I mean sex is an instinct. Its a part of life for crying out loud! Parents often like to think their teens aren't getting into it but they are wrong, wrong, wrong. It shouldn't be a touchy subject but it is. People always give me a funny look or change their voice when I mention sex, nudity, or anything of the likes cause I'm always casual about it.. anywho haha i'm not implying you go around talking about it 24/7 i guess i'm just saying if people were more open about talking about it teens would actually talk to people about it and at least get condoms and checked out for STDs and all that bad stuff. Hopefully I'm making sense!!

They don't want their kids to be exposed to sex education which they think is ridiculous. They think their kids are goody-two-shoes and would never have sex. Little do they know their child may be engaging in an orgy as we speak.

Religion.

Say I told you that there was a crime which your children could commit which would cause the police to come and throw them in a burning pit of fire where they would be slowly burned do death. Next, I said someone at your children's school was going to teach them how to commit that crime, answer their questions about the crime, let them know where they can get tools to commit that crime, explain to them how others are committing that crime, etc.

Replace "crime" with "sin" and "police" with "God" and the get the idea. If you honestly believe that your children are going to burn in hell if they have sex before marriage, then you don't send them somewhere where they might learn to have sex.

If doesn't make sense to you or me... because we honestly don't believe they are going to hell. However, keeping your kids out of sex education is perfectly reasonable if you do believe this.

We have the highest pregnancy rate because 20% of the teen girls wish to be teen mothers, and will trick the boys into it, or an adult male, with whom they can blackmail.

HPV: The Most Common STI You Don't Know About (Intro and Part 1)

This is my Master's thesis for my grad school project, which is about the human papillomavirus. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease which is allegedly the most common among sexually-active adults. This first part is an introduction to HPV, and why you should know about it. There is also a very brief history of STI awareness in this country, and how it has changed since the 1980's. For Part I of this series, I took footage from three great movies: "Eddie Murphy Delirious", "Kids", and "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery", and I have given full credit where it is due. Special thanks to Lisa Spinelli of the Boston Phoenix, Kate Adelstein of the Dimock Health Center, Marcus Schwarz of the Boston HPV and Herpes Support Group, and Dr. Adina Nack of California Lutheran University for willing to be interviewed for this story. Special thanks addiitonally to Giada Tridello for filming the multiple stand-ups required for this story. Also, extra special thanks to the folks at Boston University: Jake Kassen, Shane Kocher, Tim Lynch, Sasha Norkin and others for the equipment to shoot this story and for help with Final Cut Pro. Without their help, this story would not have been possible.
