Is a Prostate infection always and STD or STI?If you get a prostate infection is it always the result of an STI or STD? Can there be any other source of the infection?

STDs do not cause prostate infections (or at least only do rarely) It is an infection - just as any other infection. In the majority of prostatitis cases, causes are unknown.

A prostate infection occurs in one of two ways: bacteria from a urethral infection move into the prostate or infected urine moves into glandular prostatic tissue.

Any type of bacteria, fungus, virus can lead to a prostate infection. So in theory, if you have have a STD, the bacteria could cause a prostate infection if it gets to the prostate;of course, if you have a urinary tract or bladder infection (not caused by a STD), that could also lead to a prostate infection.

I would not get too freaked out that you have a prostate infection; the cause is most likely not a std. In addition, it is estimated that 1/2 of ALL men will have a prostate infection sometime in their lives (it is kind of the same as a UTI in women)
