What are some others ways of getting Pelvic Inflammatory Disease other than STDs?

What are some others ways of getting Pelvic Inflammatory Disease other than STDs?This is rather hard to talk about, but I just recently got diagnosed with P.I.D. The doctor told me its most commonly caused by STDs, but the problem is, I already was tested for STDs not long back, and all was well, so now i'm curious what else could have caused it?

Also, if there are any women here who have had it, what is the likely hood of becoming infertile?

it is true that the actual ORGANISMS that are presently causing PID may be normal bacteria from the vagina and uterus that have ascended into the fallopian tubes.

but those normal bacteria would never have caused the infection if there were not first some damage from previous STD. In almost all cases, there is chlamydia infection that was probably never recognized by the woman many years ago - this causes scarring of the fallopian tubes that makes them fibrotic and narrowed - predisposing them to infection later. It is common for chlamydia to cause infection complete with scarring of the fallopian tubes -- without ANY pain nor knowledge of the infection by the woman.

Even in the most horribly scarred, abscessed tubes, you will often NOT find any tests positive for the chlamydia nor gonorrhea at that time -- those germs may have done their harm and they may have gone away or been cleared by other antibiotic treatment years ago.

So your story is quite typical.
But to really answer your question, it is absolutely clear that PID does not occur in women who have no sexual activity. The more sexual partners, the more common PID is.

PID does not happen in virgins - it does not just happen in women without any prior history of STD (although the woman may not realize that she was previously infected). This is why it is exclusively a disease of women of the teens to late 20's -- we never see it outside those ranges.

The known statistics for impairment of fertility are related to the severity of the PID episode. And they are alarming statistics:
after on attack of PID , the risk of tubal infertility is approximately:
10% - if the attack was classified as "mild"
25% if the attack was "moderate"
50% if the attack was "severe"

But do not despair -- if infertility is due to tubal scarring, or due to debris left in the tubes, many times is can be fixed by a skillled surgeon, and the tubes can be opened up to allow a normal pregnancy.

PID can develop from bacterial vaginosis. That is a drop in the vagina's organisms that are suppost to be there and an increase in the bad ones that are also there. When this happens the organisms spread and cause PID. Since I got PID before I was ever sexually active that is what the doctors told me. The doctors told me after that happened that I would have a very hard, if at all, time getting pregant but I now have two children so I guess they were wrong. Hope this helps
