are you writing a paper? I've never heard of a STI. Maybe like getting the flu from someone through exchange of bodily fluids. good luck with that

I think it is just the way that some things are classed. some are diseases, some infections. try search engines and wikipedia maybe.

They're pretty much the same thing. But some can be cured, and some cannot.

STDisease - herpes, genital warts, HIV

STInfection - anything else, that can be cured.

STI is an updated term for STD. The term "disease" has a certain stigma to it, and implies the presence of symptoms. Most people who carry STIs do NOT present symptoms. Also, some people are sensitive to being labeled "diseased." More health professionals are using the term "infection" as a kinder or gentler way of describing these conditions.

Because sexually transmitted diseases* carry these social implications (i.e., people who get them are perceived as being bad people, dirty people, people who are in shady lines of work, etc.), they have undergone various name shifts. Before the term STD, we called them venereal diseases. But that fell out of favor because 1. diseases that can be transmitted sexually are often transmissible other ways 2. a lot of people don't know wtf "venereal" means.

* I prefer to use the term STD because people know what it means. Changing the names when the game is the same just confuses people. Considering my job is to educate people about STDs, I *need* to them understand me, first and foremost.
