STD is probably better because it puts it right out there, it's SEXUALLY transmitted. it lets you know these are transfered by SEX.

The term "venereal" disease comes from the name Venus, the Roman goddess of love. So it's a hint that the disease comes from lovemaking. After all, we needed hint back then because it owuld have been terribly crass to just refer to SEX.
But along the way, we forgot where the name came from, though we didn't totally forget what the term means.
We changed to the term STD in the last 30 years or so. But even that has had shifted to STI, referring to sexually transmitted Infections. This is because the "D" stands for "disease," and that implies symptoms. However, better testing has shown us that a lot of people are infected, but never had symptoms.
I still use the term STD because I need people to understand me when I discuss the matter. But when STI catches on more, I'll change to that. My role as a health educator requires me to focus more on being understood than to pick apart the details.

VD is a term that I think came about around the time of WW2. Young men in the service were traveling overseas and visting brothels and it was something the army tested men for. Your parents or grandparents used that term. STD is more pc and just a more accurate term.
