Is this primarily pertaining towards cases where the infection is based on a sexually transmitted infection (STI) so that they can ensure that they have it controlled or removed it from the infected party? PID can be caused by a number of bacteria that have just moved deep into the reproductive organs, or even a long list of other problems are categorized under the term PID:
"The term, pelvic inflammatory disease has been used to describe an entire group of infections including simple cervicitis, to endometritis, to salpingitis, (inflammation of the fallopian tubes), to pelvic peritonitis, and finally to generalized peritonitis, perihepatitis, or pelvic abscess" (http://content.nhiondemand.com/psv/HC1.asp?objID=100632&ctype=hc)
I am unsure exactly why sexual intercourse should be avoided for up to seven days even after the antibiotics have been taken in cases where it is not caused by STIs. Does sexual intercourse really need to be completely avoided, or would it still be reasonable to engage in sexual relations?
If you know the consequences for these actions, or why they recommend to avoid it please answer.
If you have any sources for your information that would be great. I have done some searching and they all fail to state why sexual intercourse should be avoided, and merely state to avoid it for seven days after treatment.

I think you and/or your partner should talk to your doctor for complete, accurate answers. My guess would be that intercourse during treatment could possibly hinder treatment by bacteria (or the cause of the pid) being transmitted to one or both of you. Also, it's common for women to experience pain during intercourse with pid, so I don't think you'd want to put your girlfriend through that. It's only a few days. Just wait.

They are assuming that the PID is cause by an STD because it probably was! They used to think all PID was caused by STDs, but now we know that's not true. Still, the cause of PID is usually an STD. You should avoid having sex so you can avoid reinfecting each other.
