Do think the risk of STDs is overblown?

Do think the risk of STDs is overblown? When I was in school I learned that OMG STDs are the worst thing in the world DON'T HAVE SEX. And then I learned about them and I'm wondering if we're too afraid.

Okay, HIV is a b*tch, but the virus is practically impossible to catch if you use protection. (risk of catching HIV through a condom: 1 in a 150 million). Crabs, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and Trichomonas can all be cured. HPV can be treated and vaccinated against.

That leaves us with herpes, which is probably the scariest one since it's common and has no cure. But it's very hard to spread when you don't have sores (yeah I know you can shed, but that only happens 5% of the time and it's usually right before or after an outbreak, so you can plan around them.) And besides, most people who get STDs are asymptomatic, which means NOTHING BAD HAPPENS TO THEM.

If you use protection, you probably won't get infected. And if you do, it's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

I'm with you.... I would rather get an STD like herpes, chlamydia, or HPV then be told I have cancer... Not all people who have stds are scumbags... It happens to the best of us.. I would never want to contract HIV or any disease of that matter but I agree that people take it the wrong way when they hear someone has one... One of my best friends has HERPES and she is not a whore and a very good girl she just got it from a scumbag that never told her.. People are too quick to judge

In the grand scheme of things - nothing is a big deal. However,
STDs are painful and very contagious. Why risk it? Live is sure better without an STD.

I think you have gotten some bad information. 1 in 5 adults has herpes. If it was hard to spread that wouldn't be true. Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can cause infertility which may not seem like a big deal now but it will when you are trying to start a family. HPV causes cervical cancer and although there is a vaccine it does not protect you from all strands of the virus.
It's not overblown enough if you ask me. Young people think it won't happen to them. It will and it does. I worked at a clinic in college and I can't tell you the number of young girls I saw leave crying because they just found out they had an STD.
It will be a big deal when it happens to you, and with that attitude....it will.

People like you are the reason there is so much if this going around. So when you get HIV, blame only yourself for being ignorant and selfish because is is a HUGE problem and people die from it every day.

I think u need to do some more research on the subject. Yes there are alot of ppl diagnosed with an STD that still continues to live healthy lives but if u can prevent it please do because ppl do die from them.
