Do you think that sex education should be taught in schools?

Do you think that sex education should be taught in schools? Most empirical research suggests that abstinence-only programs are ineffective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancy. Abstinence-only programs are highly criticized so with that said, do you think that sex education should be taught to teenagers and why? Isn't it important for teens to know about birth control or STD prevention?

**Note- I have quite of few friends who are teen parents or had a child when they were teen, all of them saying that their parents believed in absitence-only and forbid them from attending their sex-ed lectures in their health classes. They told me they were confused about what was happening to their bodies during puberty and were not as aware of the risks of getting STDs as they should have been. They also were not aware of the all the options of birth control and/or how much each type of birth control could prevent pregnancy. I would just like to hear others opinions...

Kids are going to learn about sex one way or another -- better the classroom than the playground, or alley.

BUT Sex Education in school should be limited to a lecture course -- no lab work

Fundamentally it's the parents' responsibility to educate their children about sex - unfortunately there are many parents out there who are either ignorant themselves or have too many hang-ups to properly teach their kids. So I am a supporter of sex ed. Even if some kids are barred from the class by their parents, they will get most of their knowledge from their peers. Better that they get sound playground advice (so to speak) than that myths and ignorance rule.

no,it should not be imparted in the schools.isn't it legalising the illegal activities?school children are not mature enough for the practicals.will the teaching not make them curious to do so?have we forgootten our indian culture of restriant?why not make the media resoponsible for making every effort possible to increase their knowledge of all this stuff not required at such early stages?all magazines, newspapers and filmwalas should behave responsibly in this regard.
