Getting the herpes simplex virus from the chickenpox? My gf says she got herpes (oral) when she was younger after having a mild case of chickenpox. I didn't know this was possible and don't really understand the connection. Is this the regular herpes virus? I had chickenpox when i was younger too but i didn't get any permanent effect from it. I've been researching without too much luck. I just want to prevent myself from getting it so I wanna make sure I know exactly what it is and the more information you can give me about it the better. Thank You

No that did not happen. Herpes and chicken pox are in the same family of virus, but they are not the same virus. She must have contracted oral herpes some other way; approximately 50% to 80% of the adult population has oral herpes, after all.

Chicken pox is of the Herpes family but it does not cause oral Herpes. You get oral Herpes from kissing, even a peck on the lips from a family member when young can spread it. It can transfer to the genitals through oral sex too.

Chicken Pox is Herpes Zoster, the oral ones are different strains, just like the genital one are different.
