How do you rationalize stoning?

How do you rationalize stoning?I'm having a very difficult time rationalizing stoning in Islam. This is probably not the greatest medium to ask a question like this, especially with the times we live in today. Maybe because I haven't read enough to understand the subject matter nor have been instructed on the reasons to these specific passages. But for the love me I cant see to grasp the reasons held to go to the maximum of ending another persons life. This is in no way an attack against Islam from me, this type of ruling is in Christianity as well as Judaism. But especially for me as I am follower of Islam I must agree to the tenets held and this particular one is were I draw the line until I get some rational concrete backing.

I know that its used if a married man or women commit adultery. That they must provide testimony by the accused or four witnesses to be considered within the legal procedure before stoned. The only reasons I could come up with is: to limit the transmission of sexually transmitted disease within the community as well as limit the inevitable harm it may cause to the society. That being physical (offspring), psychological (attachments, dishonesty), loss of faith, and the inevitable breakdown of that community.

I don't know..it just isn't enough for me. Leaves a little to much to the power of opinion and later abuse of said rule without absolute judgment.

It is almost impossible to find four witnesses. You have to have had sex infront of 4 people.I mean you can't be stupid enough to do that?
