Congrats Rachel you are going to win the 10 points since you were the first person to actually read the whole question. Even though other people answered first, they didn't take time to read the entire question, and do the appropriate research to give the scientific name, and a source as was required to get Best Answer, and 10 points.

Crabs are Pubic Lice, they get the name from their shape of their bodies. They use their legs to grip tightly onto the skin and live off your blood. The bite causes intense itching. Scratching can cause skin infections. They aren't microscopic. You can in fact see them and pick them off. The scary part is the don't restrict themselves to your pubic area but can migrate to any hairy area(eyebrows) but not the head.
Often the source of the infestation will also carry some other STD. The crabs themselves are easy to treat with an off the shelf preparation.
Orignal From: What are crabs? I'm referring to the sexually transmitted disease reference to having the crabs?
