The term 'venereal disease' is an old broad umbrella term that encompasses many diseases, The term used today is 'STD' (sexually transmitted disease). The term encompasses diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes simplex II, bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia & LGV, HPV, PID, and trichomiasis. They are usually effectively treated with antibiotics. Even though HIV can be transmitted sexually, it is not usually placed among STDs because it can be transmitted via other routes such as dirty needles and other infected instruments, blood transfusions, etc. However, because HIV can be transmitted as the other STDs, many times it is a coinfection, acquired along with the STD.
