STD's are categorized as Bacterial, Viral, Protozoan or Parasites.
Some examples of each:
Bacterial:
Chlamydia infection (Chlamydia trachomatis) About 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men have no symptoms. Male symptoms may include urethritis (itching and/or burning on urination) and discharge from the penis. If females have symptoms, they may include vaginal discharge and painful urination. Treated with antibiotics. Preventable by use of condom, sexual abstinence.
Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhea) Resides in mucous areas. Men infected with gonorrhea will have burning while urinating and a yellowish white discharge. Those few women with symptoms will have a discharge from the vagina and possibly some burning while urinating. Treated with quinalone type antibiotics. Preventable by use of condoms, sexual abstinence.
Viral:
Hepatitis B Disease affecting the liver and blood, spread by bodily fluids (not casual contact). Preventable by Hep-B vaccine, sexual abstinence and avoidance of bodily fluids of others. No medicinal treatment available; those infected should follow dietary and health regimen and avoid medicines that affect the liver.
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV): Genital warts transmitted by direct skin-to-skin contact during sex, or from mother to child during birth. Treat with a chemical called podophyllin or cryosurgery. There is no cure. Preventable by careful washing after sexual contact, abstinence or use of male or female condom.
Parasites:
Pubic Lice (Phthirius pubis) Crab lice is an infestation of the hairy parts of the body or clothing with the eggs, larvae or adults of lice. Infestations occur with direct contact among sexually active individuals. Treated with soaps and shampoos containing pyrethrins, and removal of nits with lice comb. Avoidable through education about the life cycle of lice, and how to recognize an infestation and limit spread of the lice.
Protozoan:
Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis): "Trich" is caused by a tiny parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It lives in moist, dark parts of the body. It is the number one cause of vaginal infections. You can get this STD by having unprotected sex. Women will exhibit a yellowish-green, foamy vaginal discharge, a musty odor, vaginal redness or itchiness, or both, occasional lower belly (abdominal) pain, pain when urinating, pain during sex. It can damage the uterus and fallopian tubes, a condition called Pelvic Inflamatory Disease (PID). Males do not get often get symptoms but when they do it is pain when urinating and/or a discharge. This is called urethritis. Disease is treatable with antibiotics, preventable by use of condom.
In all cases, the best course of action is PREVENTION through education and abstinence.
