How many diseases do you think you have???

Doc B
The real purpose of a Pap smear is to detect precancerous cells, nothing more. As a part of the vaginal exam, the doctor will also perform swabs to detect chlamydia and gonorrhea and perhaps HPV. The reason they check for these is because they are the top three STIs (sexually transmitted infections) and because they can be identified by a swab unlike HIV, inactive herpes simplex, and syphilis.

Those are the most common diseases and the easiest to catch. They are also easy to detect with a swab. So since they are already there they do that. If you want to be tested for other std's talk to your doctor about it. They will send you to get tested for the others. They are blood tests.

Yup, Doc B and B2B are right. The others are blood tests. Your doctor will run those tests if you ask.

A true PAP smear is only checking for cancer of the cervix. While doing the pap the doctor might choose to do other tests for std's if he has reason to believe you have unprotected sex and are not in a committed relationship.Especially if you are pregnant! You can refuse any of these but he must have thought it was needed. If the pap had been anything other then neg. he would have told you that it also checks for the human papaloma ''veneral wart.''virus which can lead to cervical cancer too.Ask questions next time! Make the doctor answer them or at least the nurse, thats what they get paid for!!!
