I'm asking this because he is a very close friend of my best friend and I don't want him to leave the poor guy alone at this hard time.
Can I normally greet him? or give him a hug?

Herpes is spread by direct skin to skin contact. For example, if you have a cold sore and kiss someone, you can transfer the virus to their mouth. Similarly, if you have active genital herpes and have vaginal or anal intercourse, you can give your partner genital herpes. Finally, if you have a cold sore and put your mouth on your partners genitals (oral sex), you can give your partner genital herpes.

How does someone get genital herpes?
Most people get genital herpes by having sex with someone who is having a herpes outbreak. This outbreak means that HSV is active. When active, the virus usually causes visible sores in the genital area. The sores cast off (shed) viruses that can infect another person. Sometimes, however, a person can have an outbreak and have no visible sores at all. People often get genital herpes by having sexual contact with others who don't know they are infected or who are having outbreaks of herpes without any sores.
A person with genital herpes also can infect a sexual partner during oral sex. The virus is spread only rarely, if at all, by touching objects such as a toilet seat or hot tub.

You can't get herpes from just greeting or hugging some one. That is not what is meant by skin to skin contact. Skin to skin contact means what happens during sexual intercourse or by kissing some one that has cold sores which are caused by oral herpes. Genital herpes is an std so it's transmitted during oral sex or sexual intercourse.
Don't kiss him on the mouth if he happens to have a cold sore and don't have oral or sexual intercourse with him if he has a genital out break. All other contact is ok, herpes doesn't last for long periods of time on objects or away from the body.
