As of 2000, in the United States, there are 45 million adolescents and adults infected with HSV1. It is very common. That's why you can't kiss everyone, nor have oral sex with everyone. 15% of all genital herpes infections are caused by HSV type 1, and are believed to be the result of mouth-to-genital contact.

Oral herpes is not an STD.

Oral herpes (which is most often caused by an oral HSV1 infection, but can be caused by HSV2) is most often caught in childhood from kissing relatives. Most adults have it, and I've heard statistics of upward of 90% of the elderly have oral HSV1.

Perhaps you are thinking of genital HSV1? I know that HPV is also quite common.

I would suggest typing "most common STD in United States" into a search engine, to get a reliable answer.

its not an std, by that logic getting a cold can be considered an std if you got it by kissing someone.

that is a very complicated question because usually HSV-type 1 is only on the mouth and is only rarely spread to the gentials, even with oral sex. I think the ratio of HSV 1 to HSV 2 on the genitals in 90 to 10. So I technically wouldn't classify HSV 1 as a std. If you don't, HPV is by far the most common STD. 80% of all women have HPV at some point in their lives.
