why are fast cars like 'civic type r's and 'impreza sti's all hatchbacks?

why are fast cars like 'civic type r's and 'impreza sti's all hatchbacks?Im in to the whole honda tuner croud and i know my stuff when it comes to that, but what i dont understand and am to shy to ask about why all the hatchbacks from all different generations are most common for the kids who like to swap fast engines, build, turbo, tune and all that good stuff. Just like the late model civic type r is only in hatchback form.

someone please clear this up for me it would be greatly appreciated :)
hatchbacks aren't cheaper though.
jdjo... i know my shit, if u claim u dont then y did u even say that. big muscle cars like camaros and mustangs and pontiacs, all that stuff its in a different class. Subarus and such arent 30grand because of speed... its because they would kick the shit out of any straight line car in a rally race. u obviously dont get my point. And i brought up civics because if you see any modified legitimate civic thats not a ricer, most are hatchbacks, the efs, egs, eks, and ems.
^^ anyways, thanks for the input

these are fast cars? a modern American V6 (base model) can keep up with these "fast" cars for 2/3 the price. with that extra 1/3, you can install a supercharger on that v6, but that's a waste of money. Go for the V8 and supercharged that. If your 300hp 4banger was fast, what's a supercharged v8?

I'll admit I don't know much about cars, but I do know that you can get a 300hp v6 camaro for 10k less than an sti. do u even know the mods you can do with 10k?

anyways... to answer your question. IMO, I feel that all the cheaper cars from previous generations were hatchbacks. they were given to the kids from their parents as their first car. This caused a bit of trend within the crowd who wanted to mod their slow ass car. in keeping with that image, the car maker made a car (lol) so that the rich will not buy a slow 4 banger and mod the crap out of it. they will buy the already modded and perfectly tuned car that's trendy with their less financially fortunate crowd (ppl with slow 4 bangers who mod their car) again, just my speculation.

tricky
Sporty cars come in different shapes and not all hatchbacks alot of sporty cars which are in a good price range for the everyday person are usually sold as a hatchback also it follows trends to what the market is selling most of at the time like the Impreza which as moved from sedans to now hatchbacks.
You find that as these cars are more reachable than say exotic cars and the often higher range sporty cars sold through makers hence the prices become reachable,Most of these cars offer a tunable engine and as said some with great handling,so a favorite with buyers on a budget.
As for the American Muscle car side this is a silly argument as Muscle cars against tuner import modified car all depends on which car against which car as there are slower and faster cars on both sides so it would be a matter of which car against the other, also often a tuner cars has lower engine power but it is often how the power is used and the way it is sent to the road, and credit due to tuners whom can free up big bhp figures from small cc engines.
Ricer wise i hate that term and is used to widely and for the wrong reasons,i had someone shout rice at me the other week yet i have a Skyline which has no over the top mods.So was it due to it being Japanese or was it a insult due to having some mods.

subaru says new hatch design creates more downforce and is needed to keep them competitive in wrc.
