This past weekend, I saw a group of guys all stop in a parking lot with brand new Evos, 350Zs, S2000s, and an STi. They all looked to be around my age (21) and none of them dressed well enough to seem like professionals.
I asked one of them how they could afford such nice cars and they said "good jobs".
How is it that these little punks can afford those cars but I can't and I'm working two very well paying ($ 17/hr) jobs?
Anybody in that boat to explain?
$ 17/hr isn't very high? So that means that these little boys are making more than $ 17/hr. I know families that survive on less than that.
The median household income for 2006 was $ 48,201, I make $ 46,044. If you include my wife's income, that goes up to almost $ 60k.
How is it that my salary isn't that high?
No manual labor here. I am college educated. I am a graphic designer for UCR and a route supervisor for a human directional company.
Am I making low wages?

I can't imagine "good jobs" meaning anything other than that daddy has a good job.

No need for name calling,I think you are a tad jealous.May be there jobs are better paying than yours,$ 17/hr isnt very high or maybe they have rich parents, who knows who cares ??

Well they can have financing on them for around 500 dollars a month maybe for around 5 years and if they're getting paid around 10/hr for 60hrs a week then that would be around a quarter of their pay every month. That should be enough money for food and rent depending on where they live. So I'm sure its possible. Or they're just stolen. Or a drug dealer. Or racing for cars/money. Or male prostituting. Or there could be many other reasons.

These guys are hocked up to their eyeballs in long term debt - they can make the monthly payments, but if the car breaks down, they will be in a pickle to come up with the funds. Don't be fooled - they are not efficient financial managers. They just put their priorities on nice cars (hmmm, may be the reason for the lack of better clothing). As a side item, I have alway wondered how people can afford two to three new cars, four wheelers, a boat, motorcycles, and a new home. I have found that in most cases, if these people lose one paycheck, a stack of dominoes start to fall - that is not for me.

Nate, you sound like a guy who knows how to live within his means, stay that way and you'll end up in good shape. With 2 jobs at $ 17/hour I might guess that you are doing at least some physical or manual labor and just keep in mind that when you get older your body will not be able to work like that and you have to grow into a job that uses your mind more than your body to keep earning.
I think Chris and another responder are right on, either a gift or an imprudent debt.
Mannliz, understand that this is just something men do, fantasize about high end cars, boats, etc and wonder how that other guy managed to get one. Cut them some slack.
