Congratulations. You have a virus that will last for the rest of your life. Avoid stress and alcohol. Use valtrax. You may be able to limit the amount of herpes outbreaks to once every 2 years in the best possible scenario.

abreva works well, acyclovir works better. i use a dab of bleach as soon as i feel it coming on. yes it will burn, but it seems to shorten the time and the size/amount. my whole family swears by it, though its unconventional. but yes, acyclovir and abreva work

There is no known cure for cold sores (facial herpes as you put it). It is a virus that affects the nerve endings around your mouth and nose. Like genital herpes, you can only treat it with prescription medication. Both are highly contagious, so if you have open weeping sores and have any skin to skin contact with another person, that person is about 99% sure to contract the illness.

The most effective method is a preventative medication called Valtrex....these big purple horse pills you must take every single day for the rest of your life. They are not cheap either....but highly effective. As long as you take them as prescribed, they are about 99% effective in controlling outbreaks and suppressing symptoms.

Another method is to use a topical (not ingested) medication called Zovirax (generic is acyclovir). This is the topical version of Valtrex and is applied at the first "tingle" of a cold sore. It can prevent a cold sore entirely if you learn to recognize the onset of a sore and apply it soon enough. Most of the time, it will shorten the duration of an active cold sore dramatically and it will heal quicker and without scarring.

Over the counter cold sore medications are NOT effective. Let me repeat that.....NOT EFFECTIVE! Abreva only relieves pain and itching, but does nothing to shorten the duration or reduce the size of a cold sore as they claim. It is wasted money.

I am a 20 year sufferer of cold sores. I only get one or two per year, so I have opted to use the topical medication since I know the onset symptoms well and usually get the meds on quickly enough to prevent a sore. I didn't want to get tied up with the cost and hassle of a daily preventative med and Zovirax works just fine for me.

Talk to your doctor about the best option for you. If you suffer frequent outbreaks, Valtrex might be the only option for you.

Good luck and sorry to hear you've contracted this horrible illness.

you knew she had herpes and you kissed her anyways...wow.
you must really like that girl.

are you for sure you even have herpes? you need to make sure u do or not. dont think that if you have relations or etc with a person with herpes that you automatically have it. its just a chance that you could have. possibility.

You can't get rid of the virus that causes herpes but the out breaks are temporary and things should go back to normal after the out break heals.
You may want to make sure that this is herpes you're dealing with. If it is, you can use cold sore creams like Abreva or Lipactin. Apply one of those regularly to the sores until they heal up. If the out break is sever then you may want to consider getting antiviral medication from your doctor to treat it.
