Can i pet a stray dog without getting any infections/diseases?

Can i pet a stray dog without getting any infections/diseases?I'm in india right now, and there's a lot of stray dogs. If I pet them on top of the head between the ears will i get any diseases?

this is what,s called an uncontrolled medical experiment. you were the subject.

Dr. S
I highly recommend you stop petting stray dogs, especially in India.

Rabies is the most serious risk and it is almost invariably fatal if not treated promptly - granted, this requires that the dog bite you or lick a wound on you skin, but the risk is not worth it. There are a number of other infectious diseases that can be transmitted by the dogs directly or the insects/arthropods that live on them (Yersiniosis, Giardia, Hydatid disease, Visceral larval migrans, and dangerous species of bacteria including Pasteurella multocida).
