Can you help me explain what this paragraph mean, b/c I'm kinda confused? Can you please help me explain the meaning of the author passage by indicating the two different sides regarding abstinence-only sex education. I was confused please please help me!!!!!

PASSAGE:

Amid all the anguish, confusion, and mixed signals surrounding teenage sexuality, the simplicity of one group's message is striking: Sex outside of marriage is just plain wrong. To instruct children in the mechanics of birth control or abortion, it argues, is to lead them down the path of self destruction. That's the philosophy of the abstinence-only movement, a coalition of parents, teachers and religious groups that has been remarkably successful in having its approach adopted as the official curriculum in schools across the country.
But is this the best approach? Opponents argue that, in an age when most teenagers are already sexually active, preaching the case for chastity without teaching the case for condoms is dangerously naïve. "All the parents I know are absolutely in favor of abstinence,'' says Carole Chervin, senior staff attorney for the Planned Parenthood Federation. "It's the abstinence- only approach that's bothersome. We believe sex education should be comprehensive. If our teenagers are already engaging in sexual activities- and still believe myths like 'you can't get pregnant the first time' or 'a few antibiotics can cure any sexually transmitted disease'- we need to educate and protect them."

"The Case for Abstinence Doesn't Work"
Author: Philip DeWitt

MY EXPLANATION: (I'm not sure my explanation is correct, please correct me).

This passage is about teenagers who engaged in sexuality at young age. Some people argue that it is dangerous when these teenagers don't wear condom to protect them since they are all ready involved in sexuality. So they want to come up with plan to teach these teenagers way to protect them.

Not exactly -- it's more of a debate on whether "abstinence" is an effective method of keeping kids from getting pregnant or STD's.

Ron
The first part is concerned with the morality and dangers of premarital sex and don't want unmarried people to have sex at all..The latter part is concerned with making the best of a dangerous practice. In young people the sex drive can be as strong as the desire to survive. They think telling young people not to have sex is a waste of time and choose instead to educate them on birth and disease control.
