I'm not sure about this exact case. But many strains of HIV have become resistant to the antiviral drugs used to combat them. HIV is a virus with a high mutation rate, so strains that mutate in a way that make them resistant to the drug will become the predominant strain in the host. (The antiviral drug will kill the susceptible virus particles)
