It the price is right, go for it. Most Subarus go 200,000+ miles. There's a reason you don't see many of them used, the owners love them.

Most modern automobiles are designed well, so that, with proper maintenance, they can last a very long time. The big problem with cars such as the STi is that the people who own them tend to drive them. Hard. Think about the STIs and Evos you see on the streets. Usually the people behind the wheel are thrashing the car as if they are in a time trial as opposed to commuting to work. If, however, the seller has not abused the vehicle, and can provide proof that the vehicle was maintained, I would say you should be OK.
For more detailed data as to the quality of the car, check out long-term reviews by auto magazines such as Car and Driver, or Road and Track, both of which have online archives where you can read their summaries of long-term ownership.

Are you in the US? If so, there is no such car.
There is a WRX, but not a WRX STI. (that was, IIRC, 04 and later)
I'd be pretty skeptical about a STI-swapped WRX. That's the only way you'd have such a thing in the US, BTW.
As for the regular WRX, it's a good, relatively reliable car, but most of them have been driven hard, and a lot of them have been owned by morons. You want maintenance records, you want it inspected by a mechanic, and you want few if any mods, and any mods should be well done with quality parts.

I dont know where the first chick is getting her info but I have 3 friends that bought WRX's all around 5 years ago and every single one of them has either traded it in or bought a different car because they are so unreliable!! If you had some money to spend look into a Toyota Supra- they will easily make it to 300,000 miles and they are way faster than an STI.

Like the other person said there is NO us version of a STI in 2002. They were introduced in 2004. Make sure it REALLY has the STI motor, not the regular WRX motor. If it was swapped, you may have problems. Usually because they did the swap for a reason (gain more power) when they do get more power they like to beat on it and push it. causing wear issues pre-maturely
