The Luna Show #156 We're Not Dolls! Don't Play with Women's Lives!
The Luna Show @ www.youtube.com The Luna Show and GMHC's volunteers and staff held a Call to Action entitled, "We're Not Dolls! Don't Play with Women's Lives!" As part of the action, GMHC's team will dress as dolls and distribute HIV prevention and testing materials to thousands of New Yorkers throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. We emphasized that the lives of women and girls matter and New York City needs more HIV prevention, care and treatment services, and comprehensive sex education in schools. HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) continue to rise at alarming rates among women and girls in New York City. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, one in three New Yorkers living with HIV is female, and the number of new HIV infections affecting the black and Hispanic female community is alarming. Approximately 90% of women living with HIV are black and Hispanic, and 94% of new HIV infections in teenage females are in blacks and Hispanics. On a national level, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that 80% of females, ages 13 to 24, living with HIV are black or Hispanic. The largest number of reported cases of both chlamydia and gonorrhea in 2008 were among girls ages 15 to 19.
