It's true that with a lot of learning and months of very careful record-keeping and planning, some women can figure out when they're most fertile, which can help if they're trying to get pregnant. This is known as the fertility awareness method, or natural family planning.
However, while there may be safer times for unprotected sex, there is no guaranteed safe time. Most women's cycles (especially teenagers') are irregular, and some women ovulate (the time when an egg is released and a woman is most fertile) very close to the time that they have their periods. Plus, sperm can live in a woman's body for up to seven days waiting for ovulation to happen.
So just because a woman isn't ovulating when she has her period doesn't mean she can't get pregnant.
The only 100 percent effective way to prevent pregnancy is to abstain from vaginal intercourse. But using condoms, the Pill, or other tried-and-true method of birth control can also help to prevent pregnancy. Remember, only latex condoms prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections.
If you have had unprotected sexual intercourse in the last couple of days, emergency contraception can help to prevent pregnancy, provided that you take the emergency contraception within 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse. Call our toll-free help line at 1-866-600-6886 for more information.

Well...it sure is nice of you to share such *inaccurate* information about natural family planning. I don't know what your role in birth control counselling is, but you should get *up to date* information (like from anytime in the last 20 years) before you make blanket statements about how unreliable NFP is!!
Have you even *read* a good resource on the subject? Try reading _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler for *accurate* information on the effectiveness of NFP. You can start using it to plan *or* avoid pregnancy in a lot less than "many months". I really feel sorry for the people who are getting prejudiced information from you and actually *believing* it.
Orignal From: this is some good information for people who think they can't get pregnant if they have a period!?
