You can catch HIV through:
oral, anal or vaginal sex with someone who's HIV positive;
sharing needles and/or syringes with someone who's HIV positive; also needlestick injuries in medical settings;
mother-to-fetus in utero and mother-to-infant through breast milk;
unscreened blood transfusions;
Sharing some kinds of sexual toys is a theoretical means of transmission.
Wound-to-wound transmission is also theoretically possible, but in real life, it doesn't really happen.
You can't get HIV from:
casual contact of any sort including kissing;
coughs or sneezes;
sharing food, drink, utensils, towels, etc., even if they may have been in contact with bodily fluids
sexual activity where bodily fluids are not exchanged.
