Trichomonas vaginalis is considered a sexually transmitted disease because it is transferred from one person to another via sexual contact.

The fact that is it is so common (prevalent) in our society is more of a reflection on our sexual practices (lack of safe sex) and not the organism's mode of transmissions.

many STDs are common. ever had a cold sore? you have herpes simplex type 1! about 80% of women in the US have human papilloma virus, which can cause breast cancer.

not all cases of STDs are transmitted through sexual intercourse.

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted parasite. As with many sexually transmitted infections, unfortunately, many times symptoms will appear in women and not in men. It is a VERY common infection and can appear without symptoms in men, so sometimes it can be difficult to determine who necessarily gave it to whom. In women, it can cause foamy discharge, discomfort, and itching. Both partners must be treated, usually with an antibiotic called metronidazole, and abstain from sex until both partners have completed treatment.

Another important thing to consider with trich is that it is VERY difficult to diagnose--doctors must take a sample of the vaginal discharge and look at it under a microscope. Usually diagnosis is made when the doctor sees the actual organisms present in the discharge, but sometimes the organisms can be very difficult to see so doctors will make the diagnosis based on symptoms alone without actually seeing the parasite under the microscope.

Trich is COMPLETELY curable with treatment, so definitely make sure you finish your antibiotics and your partner or partners do too before you have sex with them again, or you could get it back again.

So, in conclusion, it's common in both men AND women, but oftentimes, only women develop symptoms.

Women are more susceptible. Anal penetration followed by vaginal penetration OR poor hygiene can cause the problem for women.
